What is Glycogen Storage Disease?
Glucose, a type of sugar, is a key source of energy for the body, and it’s stored as glycogen. Glycogen Storage Disease (GSD) is a situation where the body cannot release glucose from the glycogen stores due to a liver enzyme deficiency, which can lead to the drop of glucose in the blood (the blood sugar level). There are 11 types of Glycogen Storage Disease, which are determined by the part of the body that’s affected by the enzyme deficiency. All these types of Glycogen Storage Disease affect the body’s ability to utilise glucose as a source of energy.

Benefits of Using Glycosade
Maintains normoglycemia for longer
- Slower rise and fall for the blood sugar level
- Prolongs normoglycemia – allows for a longer sleep period, making it a great nighttime feed for overnight fasting, due to the avoidance of a middle-of-the-night dose
- Improved duration compared to standard cornstarch therapy
Slowly Digested Starch
- Allows slower release of glucose
- May not need for nocturnal continuous enteral feed · Greater spacing between starch doses
- Contributes to metabolic control – expected to promote long-term health outcomes
May Reduce Insulin Response
- Allows a gradual decrease of blood sugar levels – helps to reduce the risk of a rapid onset of hypoglycemia
- May help to avoid hyperinsulinism
Improves Appetite
- Increase flexibility in lifestyle
- A mealtime enjoyment
- May prevent excessive weight gain
- Promotes hunger for typical foods
Reduce Colonic fermentation
- May help to improve digestibility and GI symptoms
